President's Message

Pres Msg 7-8-2018

There are always two people in every picture: the photographer and the viewer.

Ansel Adams

When I first started exploring photography my images looked like a catalog of things. I was so eager to make a record of everything that caught my attention that I took thousands of pictures. I learned a lot taking those images. I learned how to find light, the rule of thirds, the golden ratio, how to choose the right aperture - I learned the rules. I also learned that something was lacking. I could create pleasant images but they weren't compelling but I didn't understand why. Eventually I figured out what was missing.

My viewer.

Your viewer needs a story but you only have one shot to tell it. The way you frame your image dictates the experience your viewer has. Is there an emotional story line? Can you tell what kind of weather there is? Or what event it is? Layering in these elements gives your viewer a story to follow through the composition of your frame, encouraging them to spend time thinking about and feeling your image. Many of our volunteer events present you with opportunities to hone your visual story telling skills. I hope you all continue to join us and help develop a compelling record of life in Oviedo Florida.

July Field Trip - What Is It?

Time:  Anytime

Where:  Anywhere

Every summer we take a break from the heat one month and do an "on your own" expedition.  You get to plan and organize your own field trip around your home, your work or anyplace you happen to go before our July Photo Review.  Your mission is to find common, everyday objects and photograph them in a way that it isn't quite so easy to figure out just what that item is.  Here are four examples from last year but we're not telling what they are.  You might take a photo of a gadget that no-one knows what it is or zoom in for a detail shot to try and disguise something we would all recognize if we saw the whole item.  For inspiration you might want to check out the Zenfolio Field Trip galleries from 2017, 2016, 2014 or 2013 for some inspiration.  If you want to post your photos in advance there is a gallery on Zenfolio for 2018.  At our meeting we will have an informal competition to see who can best figure out "What Is It."  If you have a very tricky shot that even after you tell us what it is we won't be able to imagine it, include a shot of the whole item but be sure to name it so it comes after the What Is It shot.

"What Is It?"
Photo Review Meeting

Monday, July 16
 7:00 - 9:00 pm

We are limiting the photos to just your "What Is It?" photos, and any explanation photos for this review.  You may bring as many photos as you'd like.  Be sure to use a folder labeled "WHAT IS IT?" on the thumb drive and rename the photo files with your initials and a number (ex: OP-1, OP-2, etc.)

Fifth Monday Dinner

Monday, July 30
6:00 - 8:00 pm

There is a fifth Monday on July 30th.  We don't have a regular meeting but we do like to get together and go out to eat.  Guests and family members are always welcome to join us.

Field Trip - Lakeridge Winery
19239 U. S. 27 North
Clermont, FL 34715

Saturday, Aug 4
 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Lunch to Follow

Our August 4th field trip will take us to Lakeridge Winery in Clermont where we'll have a great opportunity to practice some indoor photography along the guided tour and during the wine tasting. We'll also get to photograph the periphery of the vineyard where grapes are still on the vines.

From their website: Tours usually run every 30 minutes and begin with a 15 minute video presentation which shows the growing of the Florida grapes to the wine making process and the finishing with the bottling and labeling. Your personal Tour Guide will then show you the production area and the spectacular view of the vineyards where the grapes are grown and harvested. The Wine Tasting is held at the large tasting counter. A selection of award winning wines ranging from dry to sweet with sparkling are usually offered. The winery tour and wine tasting lasts approximately 45 minutes.

The tour will be indoors, however there will be walking along some scaffolding, so keep that in mind when deciding whether to attend this field trip. It will be hot, so remember to bring whatever you need to make sure you'll be as comfortable as possible for our time outside. Afterwards, we'll have lunch at a local restaurant to be determined.

City Hall Gallery Entries

"Oviedo Volunteer Events"

Deadline: Wednesday, Aug 22

The Oviedo Photo Club has proudly displayed photographs in the Oviedo City Hall since 2014. We have ten photographs in City Hall and eight in the Annex next door. Five photos are selected for each new theme by our curator. They will replace five of the City Hall photos and those five photos will be moved to the Annex. The matted photos removed from the annex will then be provided to the photographers for their personal collection.

Our theme for the next round of photos in City Hall is "Oviedo Volunteer Events". The photos must have been taken after January 1, 2017 and at an event covered by the club. The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, August 22, 2018 at midnight. If your photo is selected you will need to provide a title and the name of the event it was taken at.

Photos may be either landscape or portrait but the ratio should be 11 x 14. Please submit full size files at 300 dpi.  Photos will not be disqualified if they do not fit this ratio but if they are chosen for the gallery they will be cropped or resized to fit this ratio.

To take part simply click here to send an email to the club and let us know you wish to participate. You will be provided a link to a Dropbox folder to upload your photos. You may add up to 5 photos to your Dropbox folder. You may change your photos at anytime before the deadline. Once you have submitted all of your photos you may wish to email the club to verify the files transferred properly. Before being submitted to the curator the photos will be renamed so the photographer is anonymous.

After the deadline you will receive an email with a screenshot showing the photos you submitted. Other members will not see the photos submitted unless they are selected for display by the curator. If your photograph is selected, there is a $25.00 charge for the print, mat and backer board. All photos will be printed by the club for a consistent appearance.
